UNESCO-UNEVOC pilots AI competency training for TVET educators in Malaysia

Artificial intelligence is arriving in vocational classrooms faster than most systems can train for it. In March, UNESCO-UNEVOC's AI EmpowerED programme — run in partnership with Microsoft — launched at a Malaysian university with a first cohort of 36 TVET educators building digital and AI competencies.

The pilot matters beyond its size: it tests how AI literacy can be structured as a teacher-training discipline within TVET rather than an ad-hoc add-on, and it comes as the UN reports that 86% of students feel unprepared for an AI-enabled workplace.

For TVET systems planning their own digitalisation agendas, the programme is one to watch — the educator-first approach mirrors what evidence has long suggested: technology reaches learners through qualified teachers, or not at all.
