Improving Food Security of the Vulnerable Population in Kismayo, Somalia through Access to Fishery Products
Comprehensive project commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to improve food security in Kismayo, Somalia through better access to fishery products, training programs, and infrastructure development, reaching over 459,000 people.
challenge: Somalia has the second longest coastline in Africa (3,300+ km), but one of the world's lowest per capita fish consumption rates despite marine abundance and widespread food insecurity. barriers: Lack of sales opportunities for fish,Significant losses due to poor fresh catch handling,Absence of cold chains,Very few guidelines or monitoring mechanisms for fishing and fish sales,Cultural unfamiliarity with fish consumption
Better access to high-quality fishery products has improved the food security of returnees, internally displaced persons and the population of Kismayo.

- Broad-based media campaigns on benefits of fish consumption
- Cookery courses for practical knowledge transfer
- School-based nutrition campaigns
- Health centre support for nutritional advice
- Training women in fish processing and preparation
- Commercial training schemes and microfinancing programs
- Training fishermen, fisherwomen and fishmongers in cold chain use
- Hygienic fish handling and processing training
- Development of glass fibre frames for fish drying
- Cold chain infrastructure development
- Database creation for fish species and catch information
- Support for new fishing law development
