An agriculture-led economy
Agriculture anchors Somalia's economy, accounting for close to 80% of employment and around 70% of gross domestic product. Productivity is held back by years of low investment, thin institutions and weak links to markets, leaving the country reliant on imported food. Recurrent climate shocks — drought, irregular rainfall and flooding — deepen these pressures and weigh most heavily on rural households and on women in the workforce.
Reform and regional integration
The country is pursuing a broad reform agenda: a National Transformation Plan covering 2025–2029, updated climate commitments submitted in 2021, and membership of the East African Community since March 2024. Trading agricultural goods within the regional bloc depends on standards and inspection systems that meet shared requirements — the kind of policy and quality-assurance capacity indeson is engaged to help build.
